CALM BEFORE THE STORMS...

The Gale Before the Storm

It was as if autumn sunlight
Had reached the beach
And bleached the colour from it;
Wan, or tepid it seemed,
Dank and dull,
Misted near cliff-rock spray:
The growling, lurking surf
Ready, the bleak sand’s peace to impeach…

It was as if impending storms
Had freed the sea
To bleed the beauty from it;
Agitated and rapid it seemed,
Rank and riled,
Basted by stiff bucked-spray:
The roaring, lunging tide
Ready, to lash sand’s dunes with scree…

The afternoon before the bespoke storms over the U.K., October, 2013...
